Bio

Thanks to contributor #47910340; Helen Macholan, the daughter of John and Mary Vlasin, was born in Wallace, Nebraska on January 16, 1925. She graduated from Crete High School and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Doane College in 1946, graduating with highest honors. In 1960, Helen earned her Masters of Education degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. She married John Robert (Bob) Macholan in 1949. Together, they chose Blair, Nebraska as the place to live and raise their familly, residing there for over 50 years with deep involvement in church, education, local business and community. Helen taught High School business education for 30 years in three schools: Minden, Crete and Blair, Nebraska. She was an active member of St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church for over 55 years. Honors and affiliations include: Member and Past President of the Conference of Catholic Women; Past Officer and Scholarship Chairman of the American Association of University Women; Nebraska Business Education Association; National Education Association; VFW Auxiliary; P.E.O. (a society for women university graduates); Outstanding Vocational Advisor Award and Lifetime Member--Future Business Leaders of America. In 1992, Helen and her husband received the Dana College Community Service Award, Dana's highest non-academic honor. Helen died on Wednesday, May 19, 2010 in Omaha, Nebraska. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob Macholan, her brother John Vlasin, and two sister: Idela Lorenz and Irma Sand. Survivors include: two brothers, Richard Vlasin and Raymond Vlasin; three sisters: Alice Muff, Rose Cecava, and Dorothy Welch; her daughter, Cathy Kilstrom of Denver, Colorado; Tom and Pat Macholan of Grand Rapids, Michigan; Dan and Cindy Macholan of Houston, Texas; Mike and Jayne Macholan of Omaha, Nebrasks; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The funeral was held at 10 am Tuesday, May 25th, 2010, at St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church in Blair, Nebraska. Father Mario Rapose officiated and offered words of comfort. Lynn Sobota was organist. Musical selections included: Processional: Prayer of St. Francis; Offertory: "Amazing Grace", Communion: "On Eagle's Wings"; Recessional: "How Great Thou Art". Casket bearers were: Lori Kilstrom; Kiley Eberly; Elizabeth Newton; Christina, Robert, Joel, Zachary and Katelyn Macholan. Graveside services were at Holy Cross, Blair, Nebraska.
