Bio

John Robert "Bob" Macholan, 84 John Robert (Bob) Macholan was born June 7, 1922 in Linwood,Nebraska to John and Frances (Horky) Macholan. He graduated from Crete, Nebraska High School in 1930 and attended Doane College. He joined the Navy in 1942 and served aboard the USS Iowa during World War II. After his discharge from the Navy he purchased a grocery store in Blair and named it Mac’s Food Center. He was proud of his store, his customers and his children who worked with him to support the family business for 39 years. Mr. Macholan committed his life to servant leadership and his dedication to faith, family and community exemplified this commitment. He served as lay minister for St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church and was instrumental in getting the statue of St. Francis Borgia from Italy for the new addition to the church. He received the Dana College Community Service Award in May 1992; was a member of the Memorial Community Hospital Board of Trustees for 10 years; served as treasurer of the Lions Club from 1988 to 2006; received the 1995 Melvin James Fellow award, the highest award given by the Lions Club; and was a member of the Rotary Club and the Blair Chamber of Commerce. John R. Macholan, 84, of Blair died Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2006. Left to honor his memory are his wife, Helen; a daughter, Catherine Kilstrom of Denver, Colo.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas and Patricia Macholan of Grand Rapids, Mich., Daniel and Cindy Macholan of Houston, Texas and Michael and Jayne Macholan of Omaha; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother and eight sisters. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 2 at St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church in Blair. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 3:00 p.m. Friday, Sept. 1 with a wake service at 7:00 p.m. at Campbell-Aman Funeral Home. The family requests that memorials in his name be given to St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church.
