Clarence was the oldest child of Pa Tom and Maw Ferguson. He met Mary Frances Ferguson in 1936 and their first child, JoAnn was born in 1937. They had 5 children together but never married. Clarence had a son with another woman between the first 2 of his children with Frances. Clarence drove a taxi and ran whiskey from Loudon County to Chicago. Pa Tom gave him his nickname and was known to say, "Boy that Scutter can sure drive!!!" Clarence was living in Knoxville when he died of heart failure on the bank of the river in January of 1951. He was only 38 years old.
