Shirlee M. Stout, Bleach was born November 27, 1933, at Marysville, Kan. to Charles Stout Sr. and Ann (Kotnek) Stout. Shirlee passed away Monday, Jan. 18, 1999, at the Fillmore County HOspital in Geneva, at the age of 65 years, 1 montha dn 21 days. Shirlee started her schooling in Marysville, Kan. The family moved to Belleville, Kan. She graduated from high school in Belleville in 1951. After high school, Shirlee worked as a waitress at the Kravmore Cafe, port of entry, in Belleville. Shirleee married George Taylor of Washington, Kan., in 1952. They divorced in 1955. On Sept. 14, 1956, she married Earl Bleach of Burwell. Their first home was in Geneva, where Earl was employed at the Kaneb Pipeline terminal. They purchased a small farm near Fairmont from Fred and Mable Baker in 1958. In March of 1958, they moved from Geneva to the farm. Earl continued working for Kaneb until Dec. 31, 1989. Shirlee quickly adapted to country living and enjoyed working on the farm. She was a part time shepherd, part time hog farmer, housewife and mother. Shirlee was a permanent member of the American Legion Auxiliary at Fairmont. She was a very active member and held many offices including two terms as president. Shirlee also served 12 years on the Fairmont Library Board. She enjoyed bowling and was on a women's bowling team for 32 years. During the later years Shirlee took up crocheting, reading, camping and fishing. Shirlee was attracted to children and they were attracted to her. She referred to them as little people. When she was at a family or friendly gathering, you could see there was an attraction from each of them. Shirlee was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1986. She had surgery and followed up with chemotherapy. Everything went well until January of 1996, when she was diagnosed with acute leukemia. The leukemia was put into remission, but breast cancer cells were also in the bone marrow. From that time on, it was a constant battle of more chemo-radiation, shots, blood draws, transfusions and medication. Shirlee bore her burden well and kept a good attitude.
