~Murder Victim~ Roy Billingsley, 59, of Bee County, employed on the construction of Highway No. 12 in Goliad County, was shot and killed opposite the ruins of the Aranama Mission, near where the highway passes, a few miles west of Goliad yesterday afternoon about 3 o'clock. Durand Copeland, 21, also of Bee County, went to Goliad and surrendered to Sheriff Doe Haynes after the shooting. Billingsley shot and killed Copeland's younger brother at Mineral City, Bee County, where both of them lived, a number of years ago, acting it is said,in self defense. Billingsley left Bee County after the killing and had only recently returned to this section of the state. He was driving a scraper team in throwing up the dump for Highway No. 12. Some time ago, Durand Copeland is said to have taken a shot at Billingsley's brother, William Billingsley, while Billingsley was seated in his automobile at Pettus, the charge shattering the windshield, but not injuring him. Copeland, learning that the man who killed his brother was employed on the highway near Goliad, drove to the point where he was working yesterday afternoon, parking his car in the brush some distance away. He alighted with a shotgun in his hand and when about 30 to 40 steps away fired in the direction of Billingsley, slightly wounding him, according to witnesses. Billingsley started to run and Copeland fired a second time as he pursued him, striking him in a vital spot and causing him to fall. The youth is then said to have approached his prostrate victim and fired two or three more charges of buckshot into his body, killing him. A few stray shots wounded two nearby. Durand Copeland was charged with murder and placed in the Goliad County jail.
