Bio

Jane Elizabeth STEEN was born on 25 Aug 1838 in Louisiana and died on 26 Jun 1914 in Mineral, Bee County, Texas (per her death certificate). She was probably born in Saint Landry Parish in Louisiana as that is where her father was living at the time of her birth. She was the daughter of John C. Steen (1815-1892) and Mary COCHRAN (unk-bef 1844). We know Jane's mother's name from Jane's death certificate which indicates her mother as Mary (Marie) COCHRAN and we also know that she is not the daughter of Martha D. COCHRAN (her father's 2nd wife) as her father and Martha did not marry until 1844 and Jane was born in 1838. As I have not been able to find the marriage record for John C. Steen and Mary/Marie COCHRAN, I don't know the exact date of marriage, but estimate it to be about 1837 in Louisiana. I've also found that Mary (or Marie as she was also called) was a sister of Martha D. COCHRAN - John's second wife. This is confirmed in records plus I already knew that that Martha had a sister named Marie who was born in 1806. While I personally find it a bit creepy that a sister married the widowed husband of her sister, it was very common back then and quite acceptable. Jane's full siblings were: George Nance (1840 to 1920-1930) and Ellen E. Steen (1842- ). Jane also had two half siblings from her father's second marriage to Martha D. COCHRAN: Martha F. (1846- ) and John C. Steen, Jr. (1848-1875) Sometime between 1846 and 1848, Jane's father moved his family from Louisiana to Texas. This is based on the births of John and Martha's children Martha and John. Martha was born in Louisiana and John Jr. in Texas. Jane, her siblings, her father and stepmother all appeared on the 1850 census living in Caldwell County, Texas. The "U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900" indicated that in 1855, Jane married Jeptha Lafayette Billingsley (1832-1904). However, I found the actual marriage record and they married on October 24, 1856 in Caldwell County, Texas (I'm attaching their marriage record). Jane and Jeptha had the following children: John S. (1859- ), Mattie (1861-1937), Walter (1861- ), Nellie (1866- ), Georgia Celeste (1869-1935), Jessie (1871- ), William McCambell (1874-1942), Aubrey Cleo (1877-1933) and Roy Billingsley (1879- ). --On the 1900 census, Jane indicated she was the mother of ten (10) children, but only nine (9) were living at the time of the census. I am guessing that she lost a baby in-between census records as I can find no other child for Jane and Jeptha. Jane and her family appeared on the following census records: 1860 - Papalote, Bee Co., Texas (living next to her father) 1870 - Subdivision 4, Refugio, Texas 1880 - Precinct 2 & 3, Bee Co., Texas 1900 - Justice Precincts 2 & 5, Bee Co., Texas 1910 - Mineral, Bee Co., Texas September 17, 2020: Another member sent an edit requesting that the inscription on Jane and Jeptha's headstone be added to their memorial. I accepted the edit after verifying the info was accurate but I see that it didn't load onto Jane's memorial so this is the inscription on their headstones (unfortunately, I can't make out the inscription under their dates of death. I can only make out the first line "He said ": Mother Jane E. Billingsley Aug. 25, 1838 June 26, 1914 Father J.L. Billingsley Apr. 4, 1832 Nov. 13, 1904 ~ORIGINAL INFO SUBMITTED BY CATHERINE: Jane Elizabeth (Steen) Billingsley is the daughter of John Cobine Steen by his first wife, Mary.
