Bio

Emily was the daughter of Eugene A. Henriod and Mary Thorne Mallett Henriod. She was born the day after the family moved into their new home on the corner of Main and 2nd West in American Fork, Utah. She had three brothers, Eugene Henry, William, and Fred; and two sisters, Mary Henrietta (Mrs. Don Bigler) and Helen (Mrs. David Adamson). "My home life was very happy. I was brought up in a splendid atmosphere, though moderate circumstances. Our home was a house of order and respect." "I received my early edudation at my father's school, the West School, which he taught for 21 years...I love to recall my school days and the boys and girls with whom I grew up...We would take our home-made sleighs to school in winter and go sleighing on 'Blood's Hill' just a few steps from the school and didn't we have fun?" She completed her formal schooling at age 15. At the age of 19, after four years of courtship, she married Thomas Joseph Chipman on November 28, 1888 in Logan, Utah. He was the grandson of the first settlers in American Fork. They built their home on the corner of 2nd South and 1st West. He raised sheep and continued that business for many years. They also built and operated the American Fork Lake Resort for nine years. Their children were Thomas, Myron, Glen, Arnold, Eugene, Francis, and Mary Chipman. In 1936 she suffered a severe case of smallpox. Acting as her own nurse, she "came through it all right." Her husband died of pheumonia May 15, 1944 and she died August 3, 1958 after a long illness.
