Bio
Eugene A. Henriod was the first free school teacher in Utah. He was the son of Jean Louis Henri Henriod and Domitile Deligne and was born in le Havre, France where his father owned a marine insurance and shipping company. Along with his mother, brothers and sister, he was one of the first converts to the Mormon church in France (The father had a mistress and did not join). Louis Daguerre, the "father of photography," rented a room in the Henriod home in 1839 and lived with the family while he was perfecting his new invention. Eugene emigrated to America in 1853 from Liverpool, England on the ship Elvira Owen, accompanied by other converts from England, including his future wife, Mary Thorne Mallett. They were wed on November 5, 1854 by Brigham Young. They lived in Salt Lake City until 1855 when they moved to American Fork, Utah at Young's direction. In 1860 he returned to France on a mission. He served as a second lieutenant in the Utah Territory Militia during the Indian wars. He established and taught at the first free school in Utah in American Fork and taught there for many years.
