Bio

Wellington Leader November 9, 1972 Mrs. J.A. Leach, truly a pioneer of the county, and a leader in the Methodist Church here for 70 years, died in Collingsworth General Hospital Tuesday afternoon, November 7, at the age of 95. Besides her family and home, Mrs. Leach's greatest devotion was to the Methodist Church. For many years she taught a Sunday School class for 9 year old boys, who were to look back through the years to her influence. A number were to become steward in the church, both here and in the other towns where they were to make their homes. She also was active in the Women's Society of Christian service and other phases of women's work for as long as she was able, and her association with her pastors was always close. Even earlier, she was in charge of the young people in a rural Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Woodman Circle and worked actively with the Red Cross over a long period. A skilled gardener, her flowers gave pleasure to many, and she continued to do much of the work in her yard until she was well past her 80th year. For this, the Garden Club once honored her. Like many others who came here during the first years of this century, she was from Wise County. Born Carrie Dell Curtner at Chico on March 8, 1877, she grew up there and attended West Academy and in 1908 the couple moved to Wellington and the following year into the home where she still lived at the time of her death. Mr. Leach was to become a prominent farmer and livestock man, and a founder and long time director of City State Bank. She worked closely with him, in his endeavors, riding horseback, helping brand cattle, and seeing about crops and planning for their best interests. Mrs. Leach was a neighbor after the pioneer tradition, and her love for people remained until the close of her life. Mrs. Leach is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. C.L. Gibbs of Irving. Mr. Leach preceded her in death, as their older daughter, Miss Inez Leach. She was the last surviving member of a family of 13, her twin sister, Mrs. David Stalnaker of Lubbock having died 5 years ago. Relatives living in Wellington include Mrs. R.H. Ball, Mrs. J.B. A.B. Clark, Mrs. Henry Sullivan and Earl Clark and Jack Leach.
