Bio

Tombstone reads: TRUMAN C SHELDEN DIED JAN 20, 1886 AGED 55 YEARS 26 DAYS Son of Gideon and Harriet (Chapin) Shelden, the family moved from Ontario, Canada to Genesee County, NY in 1833 before settling in Lenawee County, MI in 1835. Truman married Rhoda Gibson in Canada about 1848, and they resided near Blissfield, Lenawee County, MI. where their 2 sons, Reuben and Levi Ransom, were born. The marriage ended in divorce and Truman married Lydia Melvina Goff on 18 Mar 1860, in Lake County, IN where they continued to reside until 1866 when the family moved to Keokuk County, IA, before settling in Monroe township, Ringgold County, IA, in 1868. An article in a local newspaper said, "T. C. Sheldon ...owns 287 acres in S. Monroe. His farm is one of the highly improved ones of his township. The house is 23' x 26' in size and was built in 1870. In 1879, Mr. Sheldon sold $1,809 worth of stock off the place, has over 600 fruit trees, and is a Republican." In the fall of 1885 they returned to Lake County, IN where, on January 20, 1886, Truman was struck and killed by a train while attempting to remove a mule from the tracks. He and Lydia were the parents of 10 children, 2 of which died as infants. At the time of Truman's death only the three youngest children were still living with them in Indiana. All the children have FAG memorials & are linked below with the exception of Harriett "Hattie" Shelden, born 10 Oct 1868, Ringgold County, IA; married 22 Feb 1887, Kellerton, Ringgold, IA, to John Fredrick Dunbar (FAG memorial #122746345). She died 07 Aug 1906 in Iowa or Oklahoma, burial details are unknown.
