Decatur Herald 10/1/1918 SULLIVAN-Sept. 30. George W. Shirey of this city, was instantly killed at his home this morning by a horse striking him in the back. Mr.and Mrs.Shirey had spent Sunday in the country and this morning Mr. Shirey brought a load of cobs home driving Jack Whites team. He drove up to a light pole to tie his team and while doing so one of the horses pawed him striking him in the back between the shoulder knocking him down. Ben Dilsaver, that was passing at the time saw the horse strike him and ran to his assistance.He pulled Mr.Shirey out but he breathed but once. Mr.Shirey has lived a retired life in Sullivan for a number of years moving here from his farm. He was an enthusiastic Mason and they will all miss "Uncle George" from lodge circles. His death was quite a shock to his many friends George W.Shirey was born in Maryland in 1840 and has resided in Moultrie county the greater part of his life. He leaves surviving him a wife, Mrs. Kate Shirey and several children,all of whom are grown. Funeral arrangements have not been made at this time.
