No headstone for Mr. Mason, but did find evidence of grave next to her within that lot ************ Wiley Mason was baptized in 1842 by Elder E.B. Haney, of Peyton's Creek Baptist church in Smith County, Tennesseee. Then, Wiley Allen Mason went to St. Clair, Illinois in 1843 to enter McKendree College working his way through school. He graduated in May of 1845. Mr. Mason taught school in Shelby County, Alabama in the winter of 1845 and began the study of law. In 1849, he married Aceneth A. Chilton, daughter of Richard Chilton, of Jasper, a man of great ability. On account of the religious views of his wife, Wiley Mason abandoned the practice of law in 1854 when they moved to Texas, locating in Bastrop County. In 1854, Wiley Mason taught school for two years in Bastrop County, Texas. That year, Mr. Mason experienced a new awakening to his Christian duties. In 1856, he surrendered to the ministry. In 1857, Mr. Mason was ordained as a missionary of the Leon River Association with the Baptist State Convention. He left his wife among friends in Wiliamson County, then equipped with a Bible, hymn book, six shooter, double barrelled shotgun, he started for West Texas to preach or fight whatever the case may be. He traveled by the Colorado and Trinity Rivers. In August, 1860, his faithful wife died leaving him four sons - Richard W. Mason, Charles N. Mason, John C. Mason, William B. Mason; one daughter - Nancy C. Mason. In April 1861, he married Miss Julia A. Clabaugh. In 1862, the Mason family moved to a place known as Powelldale on the Brazos River. He organized a church with only seven members, in six months, there were 60 members. About this time, a child was born, six weeks later, hsi wife died. A few weeks later, the infant died as well. In 1861, Rev. Mason joined the Confederate service as a missionary from the Baptist State Convention. He entered Allen's Regiment, Walker's Division of the Trans-Mississippi Department. For eight months, he labored with the sick and wounded after the battle. He mixed with Federal and Confederate soldiers administering to the needs of both body and soul. After the War, Rev. Mason was arrested as an Abolitionist and a Union sympathizer. After being under arrest for 10 days, a mass meeting was called so his accusers could be face to face with him, they were all silent. He was released. Rev. Mason moved to Towash, Texas and was pastor of that church for 4-1/2 years and was moderator of the Alvardo association. In March, 1866, he married Mrs. Mary E. Toler, the widow of Thomas Toler, the district Clerk of Parker County. She was born in Alabama and came to Cherokee County, Texas at the age of seven years with her parents. After her parent's deaths, she lived wih a brother, John B. Riddle in Galveston, Texas. She had no children by her first marriage. By her marriage to Rev. Mason, she had five children - Don Allen, Mallie, Alice, Sallie, and Lilly. In 1872, Rev. Mason moved to Gainesville, Texas where he went into the General Mercantile business under the name of Rollins & Mason, then Rollins, Rowland and Mason, then finally, Mason and Company which was located at Mayesville. in 1879, he moved his family to Valley View, Texas to continue in the Mercantile business without partners. Being a member of the Mexican Veteran's Association, he received a free ticket to the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. Mr. Mason was one of the founders of the Cleburne Institute, under the control of the Baptist church, and was president of the board until it was completed. He preached as a missionary in 100 counties. He assisted in the organization of 36 churches, and five associations.
