Bernard Faye Swearingen 25 Jan 1928 – 10 Oct 2007 Funeral Services for Bernard F. Swearingen will be conducted from the North Park Assembly of God Church in Holdrege, Nebraska on Monday, October 15, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. with the Reverend Alex Brodine, officiating. Interment will be in the Elm Creek Cemetery at Elm Creek, Nebraska. Bernard Fay Swearingen, 79 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Wednesday, October 10, 2007 at the Phelps Memorial Health Center at Holdrege. Bernard was born January 25, 1928 south of Pleasanton in Buffalo County, Nebraska, the eighth of thirteen children of Clyde William and Priscilla (Wood) Swearingen. He received his education in rural Buffalo County. Following his education, Bernard assisted his father with the farming operation. He also was employed by Wilber and Wayne Brown on a ranch north of Miller, Nebraska. On June 12, 1952 he was united in marriage to Eunice Ellen Barta at Lexington, Nebraska and to this union six sons were born: Dennis, Randy, Jerry, Terry, Michael and Timothy. The family made their home in the Elm Creek area, where Bernard worked as a farmhand for several area farmers including Gene Marshall at Elm Creek for twelve years. Bernard was then employed as a Heavy Equipment Operator for the Buffalo County Departments of Roads until his retirement. Bernard enjoyed playing cards, pool, dancing, hunting, mowing yards with his riding lawn mower, and having a good visit with his friends and spending time with his family. He leaves to mourn his passing five sons: Dennis Swearingen and his wife, Clara of Atlanta, Nebraska, Randy Swearingen and his wife, Trixie of Holdrege, Terry Swearingen and his wife, Becky of Kearney, Nebraska, Michael Swearingen of Holdrege and Timothy Swearingen and his wife, Robin of Columbus, Nebraska; step-daughter, Tena Ackley and her husband, Bud of Ravenna, Nebraska; seven grandchildren: Paul Swearingen and his wife, Crystal, Tori Johnston and her husband, Rob, Travis Schriner, Amber Schriner, Brandon Swearingen, Jesse Swearingen and Kallie Swearingen; three step-grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; two sisters: Bonnie Hess of Kearney, Nebraska and Carolyn Richards and her husband, Allen of Riverdale, Nebraska; three brothers: Clarence Swearingen and his wife, Marge of DeWeise, Nebraska, Junius Swearingen and his wife, Marlena of Brule, Nebraska and Leonard Swearingen and his wife, Janice of Litchfield, Nebraska and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Jerry at nine years of age; two brothers: William and Francis Swearingen; five sisters: Norma Sutton, Leota Muirhead, Ellen Muirhead, Gaylene Harmoney and Delores Folkerts. Bernard will lie in state at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege on Sunday, October 14, 2007 from 1:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. A memorial has been established in his memory. The Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege is in charge of the arrangements.
