Bio

Ida B. Skalka, 93, of Akeley, Minn., formerly of Hastings, Neb., died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010, following an automobile accident near Fargo. Mrs. Skalka was born Dec. 24, 1916, in Grand Island to Edward H. and Bertha K. (Brabander) Hostler. On May 18, 1938, Ida was united in marriage to Clement Frank Skalka in Grand Island. He preceded her in death. Survivors of the immediate family include three daughters and a son-in-law, Judy Kay and Stuart Johnson of Akeley, Minn., Mary Kathryn Walker of Charlotte, N.C., and Barbara Ann Skalka of Hemet, Calif.; and a sister, Dorothy Brunner of Aloha, Ore. Additional survivors include two granddaughters, Kelly Walker and Kimberly Walker, both of Charlotte; and two grandsons, Jim Johnson of Akeley and Brett (Jill) Johnson of Elk River, Minn.; two great-grandchildren, Courtney Jean and Benjamin; and many nieces and nephews. She grew up in Grand Island and attended school there. She lived in Hastings while her husband was in the service. Following his honorable discharge, they started their family and also engaged in farming near Deweese. After a number of years they left farming and returned to Hastings, where she worked at the Hastings Regional Center in various capacities, including the occupational therapy department until her retirement. At the age of 86, Ida took on the challenge of earning her college degree. At the age of 91, she graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in Theology and Biblical studies from the Minnesota Graduate School of Theology in Brooklyn Center, Minn. Due to failing health, she left Hastings in 2007 and moved to northern Minnesota, where she lived with her daughter and son-law. Ida devoted herself to making a warm and loving home for her family. She spoke many times about her Irish heritage, and would sometimes dance an Irish jig and sing an Irish tune. She was also preceded in death by six brothers and sisters and a son-in-law, DeWayne Walker. Ida's died following an automobile accident while returning home from the funeral of her nephew, John O'Brien in Kearney. Published in the Kearney Hub on 2/9/2010
