Bio

Merle was inducted into the U.S. Army on Nov. 6, 1942 in Los Angeles and entered active service Nov. 19, 1942 at Fort MacArthur, CA. After attending the Airplane and Engine Mechanics Course at Keesler Field in Mississippi, he was deployed to the China-Burma-India theater and assigned to the 27th Troop Carrier Squadron, 69th Composite Wing, Army Airforce Combat Command from Jan. 1944 to Aug. 1945, during which he flew on 180 combat missions and took tender, loving care of "Eadie II," a C-47. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with one bronze oak leaf cluster and the Air Medal with one bronze oak leaf cluster. He was separated from active duty at Fort Leavenworth as a Technical Sergeant on Oct. 24, 1945. He enlisted with the U.S. Army National Guard and the Oklahoma National Guard, Hq&Svc Company, 120 Engineering C Battalion, 45th Infantry Division, as a Master Sergeant (ANG)/Sergeant First Class (OKNG) in June 1949. Inducted into active Federal service Sep. 1, 1950, he was granted a hardship discharge on Nov. 24, 1950 (due to the birth of a third child) and reverted to National Guard status. He was a Letter Carrier with the U.S. Postal Service in Stillwater, OK from 1946 to 1974.
