☆~ VETERAN, WORLD WAR II (1939-1945) ~☆ Robert "Tom" Nickel, 89, of Kearney died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010, at Mount Carmel Home Keens Memorial. He was born Aug. 4, 1920, in Axtell to Ferdinand "Bud" and Katherine (Shanahan) Nickel. On Feb. 2, 1942, he married Pauline Mintun in Burbank, Calif. Survivors include his wife; sons, Bob Nickel and his wife, Lana, of Champaign, Ill., Dennis Nickel and his wife, Ardie, of Axtell and Dan Nickel and his wife, Diane, of Lincoln; daughters, Sue Woollen and her husband, Ron, of Wilcox, Julie Rubin and her husband, Stuart, of Aurora, Colo., Mary Harris and her husband, Phil, of Lincoln, Deb Nickel of Kearney and Diane Ketelsen and her husband, Jim, of Garland; brothers, Leo Nickel and his wife, Jane, of Douglas, Wyo., and Bernard Nickel of Kearney; 19 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren. He graduated from Kearney High School in 1938. He attended government welding school in Wichita, Kan. He moved to California in August 1940 and worked as a welder at Lockheed, working on P-38 and B-17 war planes for the U.S. Army. He enlisted in the Army in July 1944 and served until 1946. After the service, he and his wife moved south of Kearney, where he farmed for 25 years. He then welded at Rockwell for 18 years and worked as a plumber at Gibbon Plumbing for 11 years. He retired in 1994. During retirement, he spent his time doing carpentry, making cradles and rocking horses for his grandchildren and traveling the West Coast. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church, a third-degree Knight of Columbus, was a member of the Wilcox Volunteer Fire Department and was a life member of the VFW and Legion clubs. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, three brothers and two grandchildren. Published in the Kearney Hub on 2/5/2010
