From either a well or cistern near his office. As late as 1962 there were wells or cisterns with hand pumps all over Dwight. Today, 2007, I am sure there are still some old ones around town. When running water came to Dwight around 1940 Dr. J. J. Srb did have it installed into their nice home but not to "his" Doctors Office. For some reason Dr. J. J. was against the idea of municipal water in Dwight so in 1938 he drove to Lincoln, University of Nebraska, and brought his daughters Ellen and Hannah home to vote against the issue. There probably were only 150 - 175 people of voting age in Dwight so their vote did matter. Hannah never did tell me if she voted for or against the issue. She probably voted against the issue because at that time she still had about an hour and a half ride back to Lincoln with her father. _______ DR. JOSEPH JOHN SRB'S DEATH FROM DAUGHTER HANNAH SRB HULTQUIST'S 1957 DIARY (Typed by Jack Hultquist. A few days before Grandpa Doc's death we had just returned home to Minden from visiting Ellen and other relatives in California.) FRIDAY, JANUARY 11 Went to see Minden play a home game of basket ball. Came home right after the game & went to bed - At 11:30 Marianne (Srb Folda of Schuyler) called & said Dad had died of a heart attack. I woke Leroy & we made plans to go to Dwight (Nebraska). Didn't go back to bed. I ironed clothes & got things ready to leave so the boys could stay at Gms (Hultquist). Leroy (Hultquist - husband) & I left at 5:30 A.M. (Saturday the 12, the 12th also would have been J. J. Srb's birthday) & Gm came & stayed with the boys (Joe and Jack). I woke them before we left. They just couldn't believe anything like that could happen. Dick (Folda) had left Dwight by the time we got there Leroy took Dad's car to Seward to have it overhauled so it could be driven when needed (by Ellen and other relatives, Agnes did not drive). Marianne stayed until night when Dick came. He had had to tell the girls (Kathy and Gail) and was quite upset about it. Leroy went home (Minden) on Sunday so Mom (Agnes Sabata Srb) & I were alone on Sun. night. Ellen (Srb Markytan) flew into Omaha Monday morning early. We went to Dodge again Monday (They had gone to Dodge on Sunday. Dodge, Nebraska is where J. J. was raised and where buried.) Sunday Leroy, Mom & I and Foldas went, too (to Dodge). The girls (Kathy and Gail) asked Mom if she was lonesome for Dad and said they were, too. They did not go to Dodge - Dad looked very natural and we all thought he should answer us. Hilda (Sabata Willhoite Agnes's sister from Superior, Nebraska) came in to Lincoln (probably by train), met by Ray (Agnes's brother and lawyer at David City). Stopped in en route to D.C. & ate lunch. MONDAY, JANUARY 14 (From California) Ellen (Markytan) & Larsens (Marty, Agnes's sister and husband Van and son Larry) came. Van & Larry spent the day around that vicinity (Dwight) selling school supplies. Marty, Ellen, Mom, Hilda, Marianne & I went to Dodge - Marianne & Dick went back (to Schuyler) in the eve. Flowers were beginning to arrive. Card & memorials by Monday, too. TUESDAY, JANUARY 15 This was the day of the funeral. Leroy & boys came from Minden & I waited at Dwight for them. They brought two large sprays from friends, here (Minden). A bitterly cold day. 4 degrees above zero & wind. Flowers almost to the ceiling surrounding the coffin. Many people braved the icy winds - Way too many for the chapel and outdoor shelter. Dr. Filinger from Clarkson conducted the service. Music was a quartet from there (Dodge) accompanied by Ann Stransky Novotny - an old friend of Hilda's and Moms. Everything was beautiful but so sad for us. The Masons conducted graveside ceremonies as did the Legion. A large flag covered the casket which was a beautiful gray metal. Mr. Humlicek did everything possible to make the day run smoothly. After the services, lunch was served to everyone who could stay & most of the food disappeared - Ardy & Helen (J. J.'s sisters) came from Calif. & Ariz. Rudy, Kay, JoAnne (J. J.s brother Adolph's two sons and dau.), Aunt Helen & Uncle A. (Adolph). Walla's from Fremont, carloads from Dwight, David (City), Schuyler. (Hannah wrote this either when she got home from the funeral in January or on May 2, 1957 which is the next entry in the diary.) (My summary of the funeral is I was 10 years old and it was a bitterly cold day. The many people who attended that funeral really had to want to attend, and had to feel a need to attend, and then yet stay for the whole funeral, especially those who could not be in the chapel had to be suffering in the bitter damp cold to be able to stay. Two generations of Srbs were highly respected in Dodge and other areas of eastern Nebraska.) ______ (The following is a letter from Actor Lyle Talbot to Dr. J. J. Srb) Lyle Talbot Hollywood, Calif. . April 17, 1934 Dear Dr. Srb, . Many thanks for your very nice letter. I was quite happy to hear that you were attending my grandmother and that she is improving. She must take it easy and I tell her that every time I write her. I certainly will write to her much oftener. It's too bad she couldn't have been out here this winter. The weather has been so beautiful. I told her you had written to me. I'm planning on coming back to Nebraska sometime this summer, possibly the first of june. Hope I may have the pleasure of seeing you then. Kindest personal regards. Sincerely, Lyle Talbot .... (One source states Lyle was raised by his grandmother. Appears as if she lived at either Dwight or Brainard.) ______
