Bio

The Sherman County Times, January 5, 1956 Frank J. Schmaljohn was found dead, Sunday afternoon in the small one room house at the edge of Rockville where he lived alone. He was last seen about 12:30 early Sunday morning as he was going home. About 4:30 in the afternoon his 10-year old son, Lloyd, came to the house and found him. He returned to his home where the children live with their mother and brought his three older sister, Shirley, Sharon and Judy, back with him. The girls called the village marshal, Lloyd Miller. After investigation, Sherman County Sheriff, Earl Hancock was called. Authorities declared death was due to suffocation. Indications were that a fire had started in the mattress, and could have been from a cigarette. The mattress had been pulled outside. Apparently, Mr. Schmaljohn returned to the house and was overcome by the fumes remaining in the house and was not able to et to the door again. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan. 4 at the Rockville Community church at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Leonard Fuqua. Music was furnished by Mrs. Louise Hanisch and Mrs. Evelyn Bartunek accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Elmer Rasmussen. Pallbearers were Ejnar Rasmussen, Joe Matejka, Dwight Brundige, Lyle Steele, Frank Matejka and Rupert Clausen. Burial was in the Ravenna cemetery with Steele Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Frank Joseph Schmaljohn was born March 31, 1909 in the Rockville community to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Schmaljohn. On. January 16, 1932 he was united in marriage with Daisy Mae Green and to them were born two sons and five daughters. Survivors are his seven children, Frank Jr., of Omaha; Mrs. Ray Kowalewski (Beverly Jean) Loup City; and Shirley, Sharon, Judy, Lloyd and Rosemary at home; one brother, Albert of Ravenna; four sisters, Mrs. Niels Thompson (Lillian) of Rockville; Mrs. Albert Schwaderer (Margaret) of Loup City; Mrs. Art Peterson (Evelyn) of Tacoma, Wash.; and Mrs. Albert Behn (Lenora) of Beaumont, Tex.; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Schmaljohn and his former wife, Daisy. He was preceded in death by one sister, Marie, who died in infancy.
