The Glenwood Opinion Tribune 16 August 1951 George Kates Dies Suddenly George Kates, formerly a florist at Glenwood State School, dropped dead on the street near the Armory last Saturday morning, August 13. He would have been 87 years of age the next day. Funeral rites were held at Reid's chapel Monday morning in charge of the Rev. J. W. Walker, assisted by the Rev. Charles Hunt. Miss Mary Evelyn Logan sang and fellow members of I. O. O. F. lodge No. 97, served as casket bearers for the interment in Glenwood cemetery. George Kates, son of William and Esther Kates, was born in Ohio, August 12, 1863. He came to this part of Iowa early in life, and made his home in Mills county. On September 7, 1887, he was united in marriage to Carrie Ann King, who preceded him in death a short time ago. They celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary in 1949. He passed away suddenly on August 11, 1951, apparently as a result of a stroke. He was a member of the Odd Fellows lodge of Glenwood and was faithful in his duties there. He was also a member of the Methodist Church. For many years he and Mrs. Kates had been frail and in poor health so that they could not enter into many activities, but he did make a daily trip up town whenever he was able. He had spent 80 years of his life in and around Glenwood. For a number of years he was the florist at the Glenwood State School. He loved his flowers and garden. He was a kind and considerate neighbor and was loved and respected by all who knew him. He is survived by a number of nieces and nephews and other relatives, but no children survive.
