Claud M. Cluney was born July 31, 1924, in Leesville, La., to the late William and Florence Cluney. He passed away peacefully on May 23, 2007, at his residence at the age of 82. Claud M. For more than 50 years, Claud Cluney has served the two larger families of the Presbyterian Communion through his contributions expressed in pastoral ministry, Christian education, counseling and mass media. He graduated from East Texas State University in 1947, obtained his master’s degree from East Texas State a year and a half later, and after a brief tenure on the faculty of East Texas State, entered Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, Austin, Texas, and graduated in 1952. Dr. Cluney was ordained by the Presbytery of Paris (PCUS) in June 1952. His pastorates were First Presbyterian Church (PCUS), Henderson, Texas; First Presbyterian Church (PCUS), Crowley, La.; Westminster Presbyterian Church (PCUS), Hattiesburg, Miss.; Hope Presbyterian Church (UPCUSA), Cypress Gardens; Central Presbyterian Church (UPCUSA), Waxahachie, Texas; First Presbyterian Church (UPCUSA) New Smyrna Beach; and First Presbyterian Church (UPCUSA) Athens, Ala. He obtained his doctorate from Vanderbilt University, graduating in May 1978. His doctoral dissertation was entitled, “The Basis for Evangelism in the New Testament.” He has served on committees at every level of the church. Through a TV program entitled, “The Pastor’s Study,” and radio broadcasts of services, he extended his preaching ministry. In the area of social service, Claud has served as a director on the boards of the YMCA, American Red Cross, United Fund, Boy Scouts, Kiwanis Club, and Rotary Club. In 1964, he was elected vice moderator of the Synod of Texas UPCUSA. He served on ecumenical committees throughout the south in bringing about racial equality, and has likewise worked diligently to bring about closer ties between the Presbyterian families. Claud is survived by his beloved wife, the former Juanita Louise “Nita” Fowler of Tyler; three sons, Patrick Keithly Cluney and his wife Linda of Orlando, Michael Edwin Cluney of Connecticut, and Carl Cluney and wife Lisa and their daughter Michelle of Orlando; sister, Jewel Caldwell Price of Tyler; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a host of beloved friends. Funeral services for Dr. Cluney are scheduled for 11:19 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Burks Walker Tippit Funeral Home with Dr. Stuart Baskin officiating.
