Bio

Joseph Mikeska was born on August 19, 1850 in the village of Zadverice, Moravia. At the time ,Moravia was part of the Austrian Empire. Joseph Mikesk arrived in Galveston on July 4, 167 with a family from Zadverice. The family that Joseph Mikeska came with was Frank Tichavsky, his wif Rozina Klimecek and a daughter Terzic. They spent 93 days on the sailing vessel. Joseph Mikesa worked and lived with his uncle in Mikeska near Nelsonville, Texas for several years. Joseph Mikeska was married to Rosalic Gabrish on December 27, 1876 at the Wesley Brethren Church by Rev. J. L. Chlumsky. Joseph Mikeska and his wife Rosalie farmed near Industry, Texas through 1880. Late in 1880 Joseph Mikeska and his family traveled to Topeka, Kansas in a covered wagon with other friends. The drought of 1881 forced the families back to Texas. On the way to Texas through Oklahoma in the Indian Territory, daughter Anna Mikeska was born on October 11, 1881. Joseph Mikeska rented some land at Rices Crossing near Taylor and farmed there through 1885. August 27, 1885, they traveled to Hillsboro and purchased the 120 acre farm. They lived in the log house until they harvested the 1886 crop and built a new house during the winter. On October 5, 1891 Joseph Mikeska became a citizen of the United States in the District Court of Hill County. The children of Joseph Mikeska and Rosalie Gabrish were: Joseph Mikeska, born October 22, 1878 at Industry, Texas. He married Frances Adam at West and had five children. Anna Mikeska, born October 11, 1881 in Chickasa Indian Territory, Oklahoma. She married Josef Krizan at West. Frank Mikeska, born July 14, 1884 at Rices Crossing. He married Albina Hejl at Taylor and had 10 children. Charlie Mikeska, born October 11, 1887 at Abbott. He married Marian Gabrish in Delware Bend, Texas and had 4 sons. Mary Mikeska, born April 21, 1890 at Abbott. She married John Svadlenak at West and had 4 children and lived in Taylor. Emil Mikeska, born December 13, 1892 at Abbott. He married Julia Parnan at West and had 2 children and lived in Fort Worth. Rosalie Mikeska, bom April 16, 1897 at Abbott. She married Jimmie Summers at Fort Worth and has no children. Both were still living as of September 11, 1989. Joseph Mikeska died May 13, 1921. His wife Rosalie preceded him in death on August 31, 1914, They are buried in the National Cemetery on the County Line Road in Hill County, Texas.
