Bio

Gilmore Tayor Barbour was born on February 4, 1907, to W. G. and Mabel (Brown) Barbour at Garden Grove, IA. He graduated from LeRoy High School in LeRoy, IA and moved to Beaconsfield, IA in 1925. In 1926, he married Theola Bear. To this union, one daughter, Betty (Barbour) Powers was born. Gilmore farmed in the Beaconsfield area and did custom threshing for neighbors until 1946, when he moved to a small farm on Highway 2 between Kellerton and Mount Ayr and opened a machine shop. Gilmore married Lois (Kirkpatrick) Greene in 1957. He continued to operate the machine shop full time until 1990, when he closed to take care of his wife. He derived great pleasure in helping his friends and neighbors and always enjoyed the challenge of repairing something others said couldn't be fixed or manufacturing a part. His work was his hobby and his joy. Gilmore has been a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church and was very active in the Masonic Lodge. He has been a member of Topaz Lodge #438 for 44 years, a member of Kellerton Eastern Star, and a 50 year member of Kellerton Odd Fellows. Gilmore is survived by his daughter, Betty (Barbour) Powers: Granddaughter, Vicki (Powers) Haefele; great granddaughter, Andrea Lyn Haefele; stepfamily, Henry and Marie Greene of Vancouver, WA, Richard and Theola Lesan of Turlock, CA, Ernest Greene and companion Delores of Tarkio, MO and their families; two sisters, Helen Long of Paris, TX and Oleta Moon and husband Normand of Omaha, NE; two sisters-in-law, Ann Barbour of Ft. Dodge, IA, and Alice Barbour of Des Moines, IA and their families; Mr. and Mrs. Orville Bear, Mrs. Doris (Bear) Campbell and a host of Bear family nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Lois and son-in-law Ralph (George) Powers in 1992, his great grandson, Josh Haefele, his parents and two brothers, Russell and Edwin Barbour. Gilmore passed away August 19, 1995, at the Health Care Center in Mount Ayr. Services were held at the United Methodist Church in Kellerton, IA on August 23, 1995.
