An Obituary from "Gatesville Messenger & Star Forum," Thursday, December 7, 1978: Sam L. Ward, 90, of Gatesville died Tuesday in the local hospital. A retired carpenter and house painter, he was a lifelong resident of Coryell County. Funeral services were pending Wednesday morning at the Gatesville Funeral Home. Mr. Ward was born Sept. 30, 1888, in the Ater community, the son of James and Mary Ward. He married Miss Pauline Ingram in McGregor on Jan. 13, 1923, and they lived in Gatesville all their married life. Mrs. Ward died in 1968. Mr. Ward was a member of the First Baptist Church. He was a veteran of World War I. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Clyde (Catherine) Parker of Victoria; a son, Bob Ward of Houston; and five grandchildren.
