Merle (Bill) Whaley of Loup City passed away at the community Hospital on Sunday, April 3rd, at the age of 69 years, 1 month, and 18 days. Merle was born February 16, 1914 at Callaway, Nebraska the seventh child of Red Earl and Anna Gertrude (Nansel) Whaley. Bill attended Sand Valley School and graduated from Callaway High School in 1932. He was united in marriage to Laura Swisher on March 23rd, 1940 and to this union three children were born: Dean of Trenton, Ne., Wanda Allington of Imperial, Ne., and Jeanette Heaps of Cheyenne, Wy. Bill was engaged in farming and custom work as long as his health permitted. Since that time, he had been dedicated in community services, and at the time of his death he was employed at the Rose Lane Nursing Home in Loup City, Ne. Mr. Whaley was a member of the Saint Josaphat Catholic Church in Loup City, as well as belonging to B.P.O.E. Lodge number 1688 and the Knights of Columbus in Broken Bow. Survivors include his wife Laura, one Son Dean: two daughters, Wanda and Jeanette; five brothers: Lynn of Carroll, Iowa; Sidney of Callaway, Ne.; Joe of Broken Bow, Ne.; Norris of Los Angeles, Ca.; Stan of Salt Lake City, Ut.; four sisters: Ruby Ellison of Eugene, Or.; Arline Vybiral of Wahoo Ne.; Audrey Gentile of Encino Ca.; eleven grandchildren; one great-grandchild, and a host of relatives and friends. He was proceeded in death by his parents, three brothers; Godfrey, Curt, and Keith, and one grandchild, Lizbeth Elaine. Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 6, 1983 at 10:00 a.m. at the Saint Joseph's Catholic Church in Broken Bow with Father Alphonse Broadway officiating. Margie Kimball was the organist and Pam Jelinek the soloist. Pallbearers included: Fred Whaley, Rodney Whaley, Jim Whaley, Steve Whaley, and Charles Kleeb, Honarary Pallbearers were Don Denesia, Alvis Ridder, Frank Beran, William Mohatt, Bill Moroney, and Del Lonowski. Burial was in the Saint Joseph's Catholic Cemetery. Govier Brothers Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
