Bio

Willie Lee Simpson, 88, peacefully entered Heaven's gates on Tuesday, September 30, 2008. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 66 years, Mary Anna Simpson, son, Larry Lee Simpson, parents Robert Leo "Lefty" and Retha Elizabeth Simpson, brother Jimmie Ray Simpson and granddaughter Tiffany Campbell Pierrot. He leaves behind his daughters Norma Jean Anderson and husband Carl; Loretta Ann Schlegel; Betty Lee Campbell and husband Kris; granddaughter Debi Anderson Miller and husband Bert; grandsons David Scott Anderson and wife Janet, Christian Campbell and wife Kristine; great grandchildren Ryan, Travis, Derek, and Victoria (Tori) Miller, Alyssa Pierrot; and brother C. J. Simpson and wife Arlene. Born October 9, 1919 in Van Alstyne, Texas, the middle son of sharecroppers, Willie joined the U.S. Army in 1937. He was stationed at Ft. Sam Houston and proudly served his country until 1943. It was during this time that he met the love of his life, Mary Anna, on a blind date. They were married on March 1, 1941. After leaving the Army, he joined the civil work force at Kelly Air Force Base, serving as a special weapons inspector. While still working at Kelly AFB, Willie and his brother C.J. opened Simpson's Radio and TV Shop on General McMullen Drive and for many years they operated a successful business known for its honesty and integrity. He later left the business to C.J. and returned to Civil Service work at Kelly until he retired in 1974. Willie and Mary Anna purchased a small cabin on Seekatz Cove at Medina Lake in the mid-1950's where many friends and family have wonderful memories of water skiing and enjoying the lake in the summer. When he retired, he single-handedly expanded and renovated the cabin into their retirement home. In 1975, he and Mary Anna moved into their "dream home" on Medina Lake where they lived until 2004. Their home was sold, remodeled and is now a beautiful vacation rental called "Memories on Medina". Besides the many memories, they made at Medina Lake, Willie and Mary Anna loved to travel in their RV. They made many friends as they visited every state in the continental United States and several provinces in Canada. After Mary Anna had a stroke in 1998, Willie cared for her full time until his health limited his activities. They made a new home with Loretta in 2004, across the street from Norma and Carl. Willie continued to care for Mary Anna during the day and never left her side until she passed away in December 2007. Willie was a devoted husband and father who worked hard to support his family. He was a man of his word, his hand shake as good as his signature. He loved his God, his country and his family. A devout Christian, he humbly served many as a deacon at Edgewood Baptist Church and later at First Baptist Church of Helotes. He was a loving example and father-figure to many. Visitation will be at Tondre-Guinn Funeral Home in Castroville, Texas, on Saturday, October 4, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., with the funeral service beginning at 3:00 p.m. Interment will follow in the Castroville Community Cemetery with military honors. Pallbearers will be Carl Anderson, Scott Anderson, Kris Campbell, Bert Miller, Ryan Miller and Charles Schlegel. Junior Pallbearers are Derek Miller and Travis Miller.
