Anchorage Daily News Services for retired dairy worker Raymond Charles Vanek, 57, were held at Highway Church of God, 349 E. Arctic Ave. in Palmer. Officiating was the Rev. Jack O'Mary. A visitation was at Kehl's Palmer Memorial Chapel, 209 S. Alaska Way. Mr. Vanek died Thursday, May 26, at Valley Hospital after a long illness. Born July 29, 1930, in Brook Park, Minn., he had lived in Alaska for 38 years. In the early 1950s, Mr. Vanek tended bar in Palmer. He later worked for the Alaska Railroad. He also was employed as a carpenter in Anchorage. He was a former longtime member of the Royal Order of the Moose No. 739 in Palmer, and at one time served that group as steward. He also is a former member of the Elks Lodge No. 1842 in Palmer. Mr. Vanek retired from Matanuska Maid Dairy in 1984. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Jackie, of Palmer; five daughters, Jodie Mann, Autumn Chapman, Holly Beaty and Sigrid Vanek, all of Palmer, and Jackie Barnhart of Anchorage; his parents, Fred and Julia, both of Brookpark, Minn.; his brothers, Ernest, of Minnesota, Robert, of Hibbing, Minn., David, of California, and the Rev. James, of Grantsburg, Wisc.; his sisters, Adeline Stern of Tacoma, Wash., Dorothy Raines, of Quamba, Minn., and Evelyn Korpi of Crystal, Minn.; and 12 grandchildren. Pallbearers were Peter Mann, John Chapman, Sam Beaty, Michael Barnhart, Pat Williams, Al Frey, Dwight Hauptman and Dewayne Stuthard. A graveside service was held after the funeral at Palmer Pioneer Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Diabetes Association. Arrangements by Kehl's Palmer Mortuary.
