Arnold (Sarge) Svacek, age 78 of West, died Sunday morning, July 21, 1996 at the Veterans Administrative Hospital in Waco. A rosary will be recited at 10 a.m. (Saturday) July 27 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of the Assumption. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:15 Saturday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of the Assumption with the Rev. Ed Karasek as celebrant. Military Graveside Rites will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery conducted by VFW Post 4819 of West. Mr. Svacek was born July 11, 1918 in West, the son of Victor and Mary Svacek. He married Helen Ann Sykora on April 15, 1946 in Waco. He served with the United States Army for 23 years as an Atomic Engineer and a Drill Sergeant until he retired in 1959. While serving in the army he is a survivor of the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor without being hit; and he also spent 35 months and 15 days in combat after Pearl Harbor and survived many other attacks. As part of a dedication ceremony at a new recreation center at Camp Stoneham, California, Mr. Svacek was chosen by screen actress Lucille Ball as “My Favorite Serviceman” and given the title as the prettiest GI in the army. He immediately returned to Texas after his retirement from the army, settled in Dallas and went to work for Security Engineering, now Dresser Oilfield and Mining Equipment. He came to be known as “Sarge” to all his friends at Dresser, and frequently greeted fellow employees with a salute. He worked at Dresser Oilfield for 14 years until he retired in 1973. Mr. Svacek was a life member of the VFW Post 4819 in West; life member of the Disabled American Veterans Post 215 at Laguna Park; life member of Pearl Harbor Survivors Association; life member of American Legion Post 478 in West; life member of National Association Uniform Services in Springfield, Virginia; a member of United Services of Disabled Retirees and American Association of Retired Persons. He is also a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of the Assumption in West. He is survived by his wife Helen of West; a niece and her husband, JoAnn and Keith Williams of Waxahachie; a brother, Vince Svacek of Marysville, California; and several other nieces and nephews. Pallbearers are the VFW members. Honorary pallbearers are the members of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. on Friday.
