Bio

Hollis H. "Pete" Neill, age 79, of Abbott, passed away Friday afternoon, February 15, 2002, at Providence Health Center in Waco. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Sunday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Abbott. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, with the Rev. Jerry Ryan, O.S.A., and Rev. Isidore Rozycki as celebrants. Military Graveside Rites will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery near West, provided by the VFW Post #4819 of West. Mr. Neill was born on March 9, 1922, in Waco, the son of Hugh and Emma Neill. He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II and the Battle of the Midway Islands and Coral Seas. He married Martha B. Smajstrla on February 27, 1946 in West. He worked as a truck tire builder for the General Tire and Rubber Company in Waco for twenty-eight years until his retirement in 1977. He loved to reminisce about the Pearl Harbor Days, fishing, watching old movies, and playing with his grandchildren. He was a member of the United Workers Union Local #312, VFW Post #4819, American Legion #478, Pearl Harbor Survivor's Association Club 10 in Waco, K.J.T. St. Charles Society #107 in Abbott, and Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Abbott. He is preceded in death by an infant son, Patrick P. Neill, who died in 1955, and four brothers, Bryan Neill, Keith Neill, Arthur Neill, and Delbert Neill. He is survived by his beloved wife, Martha B. Neill of Abbott; five sons, Robert R. Neill and wife Betty Jo of West, Thomas J. Neill and wife Nancy of Elm Mott, Billy J. Neill and wife Sherrie of Chalk Bluff, James J. Neill and wife Darlene of Abbott and John D. Neill and wife Lisa of Tours; one daughter, Patricia A. Kolar and husband Raymond of West; two brothers, Raymond F. Neill of Denton and Fred A. Neill of Waco; one sister, Violet J. Alexander of Waco; fifteen grandchildren, Melissa Warren and husband Bill J., Jason Neill, Kevin Neill, Erin Neill, Catherine Neill, Allison Neill, Wes Neill, Scott Neill, Christopher Neill, David Neill, Nicholas Neill and wife Carla, Justin Neill, Chad Kolar and Stacy, Brent Kolar and Ashley Kolar; three great-grandchildren, Bailey Warren, Braxson Warren and Collin Neill. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Jason Neill, Kevin Neill, Wes Neill, Scott Neill, Christopher Neill, David Neill, Nicholas Neill, and Justin Neill. Honorary pallbearers will be grandchildren, Melissa Warren, Ern Neill, Catherine Neill, Allison Neill, Ashley Kolar, and the Pearl Harbor Survivors Group.
