Jessie McDole, age 89, of Red Cloud died Monday, November 16, 2009 at Red Cloud. Funeral services were held Friday, 10:30 a.m., November 20, 2009 at the First United Methodist Church in Red Cloud with the Rev. Richard Fairbanks officiating. Interment was at the Red Cloud Cemetery. Jessie Evelyn McDole, the daughter of Jennie "Jane" Votapka and Jesse E. Haley, was born at the family farm five miles northwest of Fairbury, in Jefferson County, Nebraska, on September 21, 1920. She departed this life at Red Cloud, Nebraska on November 16, 2009 at the age of 89 years. Jessie was the youngest of four children, and her three older sisters, Caroline Reed, Wilma Blanche Brown and Elsie Dague, preceded her in death. Jessie graduated from Fairbury High School in 1938 with a teaching certificate. On June 1, 1941 she married Dale C. McDole at Washington, Kansas. Dale, a welder, moved his young bride to Leavenworth, Kansas and later to Evansville, Indiana, where he worked in the war-time ship-building effort. Jessie and Dale became the parents of three children, Dale, Jr., Jerry and Irene, and had returned to Fairbury by the time Dale reported for military service in the Philippines in November of 1944. Following the end of World War II, Jessie and Dale and their family moved to Red Cloud, Nebraska, and on February 11, 1946, Dale opened McDole's Welding Shop at 246 North Elm Street. In 1949 the existing structure was replaced with a new building that stands there today. A fourth child, Hayes, was born some years later. Jessie was a wife, mother, bookkeeper and partner in Dale's business. He was not retired at the time of his death in 1990, and Jessie never retired but continued to keep their place of business open in the years following his death. The doors of the welding shop were open for more than 63 years, and Jessie was recently recognized by Linweld Welding Supply as being their longest continuous welding supplies customer (50 years). In addition to her family and business responsibilities, in earlier years Jessie served as a Cub Scout den mother and as a Mother Advisor to the Rainbow Girls. Jessie was a member of the Red Cloud Methodist Church for over 50 years, Acacia Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star (50+ years), Red Cloud Area Chamber of Commerce (63 years), the VFW Auxiliary (50+ years), and she was a Lifetime Member of the Willa Cather Pioneer Memorial. Outside of her tireless interest in her family, Jessie truly enjoyed visiting with the many nice people who would stop at the welding shop, whether on business or just to talk. She came to regard many of them as extended family. Jessie liked people of all ages and she willingly helped anyone she could. She especially liked younger folks to whom she would readily give whatever maternal guidance, counsel or wisdom that she might have to give them. In later years, in addition to her four children, Jessie had a "chosen son", William G. "Bill" Bennett, now of Vancouver, Washington, who was a K-12 school classmate of Dale, Jr. Jessie made a point of staying in touch with her relatives and friends, by visiting with them in person or on the telephone, but particularly by writing letter to them. She never had to say it, but it was apparent that she could be proud of the distinctive penmanship that she developed in the years she spent attending a country school. Jessie was preceded in death by an infant granddaughter. She is survived by her four children, daughters-in-law Estela Chan (Mrs. Jerry) McDole and Lolita (Mrs. Hayes) McDole, son-in-law Carl Andersen, ten grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, other relatives and her many friends. Jessie will be remembered by her family for her unending and unqualified love for them, for her devotion to her family and friends, and for her generosity. In lieu of flowers, Jessie requested that memorials may be directed to the Salvation Army or to a Shriner's Hospital for Burned and Crippled Children.
