Decatur Wise County Messenger , Sept. 22, 1955 Obituary of A.J. Roberts A.J. Roberts, son of Bert and Nannie Roberts of Decatur, Texas was born on July 22, 1915 in the Valley View Community of Wise County. He departed this life Monday, Sept 12th at 8:00 p.m. in a local hospital as a result of burns that he received after a gasoline explosion while trying to start a tractor last Thursday on his farm 12 miles east of Decatur. He was 40 years of age. He received his schooling at the Sycamore Pecan School and at Decatur High School in 1933. After completeing his schooling he was engaged in farming with his father. On July 16th, 1942 he entered the service of his country. He served with the 2nd Marine Division in the Pacific Theater. He fought in the battles of Guadalcanal, Tawara, Saipan, and Tianian. After his discharge in November of 1945, he again became engaged in farming and ranching and at the time of his death was employed near Dalhart, Texas by Mr. Robert Alexander and Mr. David Long. He was at home on a visit at the time of his accident. He was converted at a meeting at Sycamore in his early manhood and united with the Sycamore Baptist Church where he held membership at the time of his death. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bert Roberts of Decatur, one sister Mrs R.E. Florida of Kerrick, Texas, one brother N.B. Roberts of Decatur. He is survived by a number of aunts, uncles, neices and nephews. and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Wednesday, September 14th at 2:30 at the Sycamore Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. R.H. Watkins and by Rev. W.H. Williams pastor. Pallbearers were; Fred McDaniel, Allen Boren, Alton Brewster, A.W. Taylor, all of Kerrick. John Griffeth, Rhome; Walter Vincent of Stratford, Texas, Walter Williams of Fort Worth; Joe Reeves, H.R. Fullington, and Damon Sampler of Decatur. Interment was in Sycamore Cemetery.
