Bio

James Malcum, known as "Mac" was married to a widow, Montie Lee (Russell) Preston. Her husband had died in Altoga, TX, in 1912, and had left her with with a young son, Alva, who wasn't quite two years old. Mac & Montie were living in Socorro Co, NM, when the 1930 Federal Census was taken. Mac (age 27), Montie, & Alva were living in Carrizozo, Lincoln Co, NM, when he registered for the WWI draft on June 20, 1917. He was self employed as a farmer near Gran Quivira. His physical description was medium build & height, blue eyes & brown hair. He indicated that his large toe was off & he had an appendectomy. The certificate was signed "James Malcum Turner." The 1930 census indicates that he didn't have to serve in the war. Max & Montie lived on a farm outside of Gran Quivira, where they raised beans. They were later forced to sell when the government claimed their land, and they moved to Mountainair, NM.
