Bio

Listed in Ligon's Portraiture of Preachers in 1899. In Shelby, TX, on Aug. 3, 1867, he married Ann Downing Oates who was born in 1847. "Allen, the oldest, was educated in a Baptist seminary and was a Baptist preacher until he went into a debate with a Campellite - Christian Church minister. Debates were popular at the time. He lost the debate and became a Church of Christ minister for the remainder of his life. Allen joined the Confederate Army with his dad in Feb. 1962. He was discharged soon afterward due to an enlarged heart." Copied from www.ancestry.com. Allen Dusky King was born in Coffee County Alabama, January 8, 1841. With the family he moved to Shelby County, Texas, February, 1848. In that section public schools were unknown at that time and his education was received in private institutions. In 1862 he went out with Capt. Anderson and was mustered into service in the Confederate Army under Col. O. M. Roberts, at Houston, Texas. After a few months service he was discharged on account of general physical disability. December 9, 1862, he was baptized into Christ and began teaching the Truth to those he was associated with. In 1867 he began active work as an evangelist. For more than forty years he has been presenting the Truth as revealed. Incident to the life of a faithful Gospel preacher, he has been forced to make many sacrifices. He has baptized a large number and occasionally engaged in discussions. -- The Preceptor , Sept. 1976, 12.
