Herald Coaster, January 9, 2004: Mary Matcek, age 91, of Wharton, died Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, in a Wharton hospital following an extended illness. She was born Jan. 27, 1912, in Yoakum and was the daughter of the late August Chilek and Anna Micola Chilek. Mrs. Matcek had been a resident of Wharton County for over 50 years and was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton. She was also a member of the SPJST Lodge 81 of Needville. She married Charlie Matcek Jan. 25, 1941, in Wharton. He preceded her in death on June 7, 1992. She was also preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters. A rosary was recited on Tuesday evening, Dec. 16, at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home and funeral services were held on Dec. 17, 2003 at Wharton Funeral Home with the Rev. Henry Rachunek and the Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Burial followed at the Needville Public Cemetery. Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Charlie and Vickie Matcek of Brazoria; Stanley and Linda Matcek of New Caney; and Donald Matcek of Lake Jackson; brother and sister-in-law, Adolph and Elsie Chilek of Boling; sister-in-law, Nancy Schriewer of Rosenberg; and Tracy Ridenour of Houston; grandchildren, Kyle Matcek; Eric Matcek; Robyn Kendrick; and Susan Matcek; also, numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were John Kubes, John Roades, Julius Pavlas, Clement Chilek, Bernard Chilek, and John Chemlik. Honorary Pallbearers were Eric Matcek, Robert Schriewer, and Claude Ray Vickers. For those wishing, in lieu of usual remembrances, the family requests memorials to your favorite charity. Funeral services were under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Home.
