Funeral for Ray Hubbard Champion, 79, of Somerville will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at New Friendship Baptist Church with the Rev. Tommy Smothers officiating. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery with Peck Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home. Mr. Champion died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at Summerford Nursing Home. He was born April 29, 1922, in Morgan County to Washington Hubbard Champion and Irene Elizabeth Beasley Champion. He was a member and deacon of New Friendship Baptist Church. He was a World War II Navy veteran. He retired as an aerospace engineering technician from NASA after having worked on the Apollo missions. He was a member of Plumbers and Steamfitters Local No. 377 and the widower of Lorene Champion. Survivors include two sons, John H. Champion and Donald R. Champion, both of Hartselle; four daughters, Fay Yancey of Priceville, Royce Goree and Sheena Dugger, both of Somerville, and Delores Taylor of Decatur; one brother, Millard Champion of Somerville; one sister, Vivian Smith of Somerville; 11 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.
