Bio

North Carolina Death Certificates, 1909-1975 Name: Leona Wright Nelms Hardman Gender: Female Race: White Age: 87 Birth Date: 7 Jan 1874 Birth Place: Merriweather County, Georgia, United States Death Date: 1 Aug 1961 Death Location: Fayetteville, Cumberland Father's Name: Dr. Jacob Wright Mother's Name: Ann Elizabeth Matthews Residence: Fayetteville, Cumberland, North Carolina Educations: 1) two years at Agnes Scott, Decatur, Georgia. 2) two years at Peabody Normal School, Nashville, Tennessee. Graduated in 1895. L.I degree conferred. This was certification of License to give Instructions. Spouses: 1) Merritt F. Nelms. 2) Thomas Colquitt Hardman. March 4, 1925. Worked under the leadership of Professor William Herschel Cobb, father of baseball legend, Ty Cobb, while he was principal and instructor at the following schools. 1) First Assistant Principal - Carnesville High School Carnesville, Georgia 1895-1896. 2) First Assistant Principal - Royston High School Royston, Georgia 1897-1905 Agnes Scott opened its doors as the Decatur Female Seminary in 1889, and was renamed the Agnes Scott Institute the next year. I finally found her name in a periodical from 1898, which listed all of the past officers of the "Mnemosynean Literary Society", and has Leona Wright as the business manager for 1892 - 93. The Mnemosynean published something monthly, but I am unsure if it was more like a newsletter or literary magazine. Agnes Scott didn't become a college until 1906, so when she was here it was still a secondary school. Based on this she would probably have been at Peabody in 1893 or 1894.
