Crawford County Democrat Friday 14 March 1941 C. M. C. Kemp Alton--- Cassius Marcellus Clay Kemp, son of John and Elizabeth Sheckell Kemp, was born April 17, 1860, and died March 6, 1941, aged 80 years 10 months and 19 days. He married Julia A. Purcell on July 24, 1882. Elven children were born to this union, three sons and eight daughters, He was preceded in Death by his wife and an infant daughter, Bettie Jane. He leaves to mourn his departure Mrs. Marion Harvey, Mrs Albert Bullington, Mrs. John Johnson and John Randall Kemp, all of Alton; Mrs Hetbert Cox, of Magnolia; Mrs. Taylor McClain, of Tobinsport; Mrs. Oscar Coleman and E. L. Kemp, of Cape Sandy; Mrs. D. A. Gaither, of Moweaqua, ILL., and George F. Kemp, of Bethany, ILL; 61 grandchildren, 24 grate-grandchildren; one brother, George W. Kemp, of Anna, Texas; two half-brothers, Jack Kemp, of New Albany, and Porter Kemp, of Leavenworth, and a half-sister Mrs. Henry Pearson, of Paducah, Ky. He joined the Alton Baptist Church in early life. On September 3, 1899, he joined the Alton I. O. O. F. lodge, No. 697. Uncle lay as he was known, had been in falling health for several months and for the last several weeks had keep his bed almost all the time. Gradually growing weaker until Thursday at 5 A. M. he quietly slipped away. He always wanted his youngest son, John to remain with him, John and his wife lived in the home and cared for him doing all loving hands could do to lessen his suffering and to make his last moments pleasant as possible. The funeral was held Saturday at 2 P. M. at the Baptist church by Leonard Cummins and he was laid to rest, in the Baptist cemetery. " Sleep on dear father and take they rest.
