Son of Martin Luther Whitaker of Holton, Ripley County, Indiana and Kittie Lillie Blanche Amsberry of Pella, Marion County, Iowa. "Howard Augustus Whitaker, 79, of Scottsbluff, died Tuesday in a local nursing home. He was born August 12, 1891 at Mason City, Nebraska. At the age of five he moved with his family to south Omaha where they lived until 1906 when they came to Sioux County and homesteaded near Canton, later to be known as Curly. He moved to Scottsbluff in 1917. He had worked as a sheepherder and had operated an automobile repair shop for some time. During World War Two, he worked in the Seattle area and returned to Scottsbluff to work until ill health forced his retirement. He had been a member of the First Christian Church since 1918. Survivors include a brother, Clifford, of Greeley, Colorado and a sister, Mrs. Hugh (Helen) Jull of Salem, Oregon. He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First Christian Church with the Rev. Francis Bruce officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Dugan Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements."
