Bio

Researched by Jaycie Smith Rinehart: Born: December 1, 1901, Henderson County, Texas. Died: April 27, 1956, Dallas VA hospital, Dallas County, Texas. Cause of death: epidermoid carcinoma of esophagus. Occupation: carpenter. Father: William Lavegie Darden. Mother: Janette Barton. Walter and Lena Lane were the parents of Aubrey Junior Darden. Comments: Walter Darden served in the US Army during World War II, in the 1864th SCU Medical department, June 12, 1942 – June 16, 1945. Walter Darden, route 1, LaRue, was in Athens shopping Saturday and came to the Square to look around. Mr. Darden is paying lots of attention to cattle … he has six head of cattle and 19 pigs and hogs. “We have plenty of feed – made it this year – and we ginned three bales of cotton,” he said. Insects and rain cut the crop short, however. Mr. Darden said that the pasture is good. Mr. Darden came to Athens with his brother, W. G. Darden, who has a grocery store at Leagueville. Walter said his brother’s house burned November 12 with a loss of about $1,000 but that plans are underway to rebuild soon. Funeral services were held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Leagueville Baptist Church for Walter Alfred Darden, 54, who died in a VA hospital in Dallas Friday at 5:30 p.m. after a short illness. The Rev. Tommy Stepter, pastor, and the Rev. T. L. Slimp of Athens conducted the services and interment was in the Leagueville Cemetery. The Hassell and Foster Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Darden, a construction worker, was born at Shady Grove, Henderson County, and lived in this county until 1950 when he moved to Hobbs, New Mexico. Survivors are three brothers, W. G. Darden of route 2, Athens; H. M. Darden of Breckenridge and Jimmy A. Darden of Winatachie, Washington, and three sisters, Mrs. D. Richardson, Mrs. B. W. Richardson and Mrs. Frankie Mae Simms, all of Athens. Published in the Athens Weekly Review, May 3, 1956. Contributor: Wayne Smith (47181024) [email protected]
