Bio

After 85 years in this realm, our dear wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed on to a happier existence, September 18, 2009. Born in Springville to Chauncey H. Childs and Erva Carling on July 19, 1924. She learned to play the violin, viola, and clarinet in musical groups directed by her father. She left Springville during World War II to work at the Salt Lake Arms plant making bullets for the war effort and then transferred to the Naval Supply Depot in Clearfield. After the war she met John, her sweetheart of 63 years. They were married on June 17, 1946 and settled in Salt Lake County. They were later sealed in the Jordan River Temple. Music continued to be important in her life. She played the piano and organ and was frequently found sharing her beautiful alto voice or accompanying singing groups. Always an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, she served in many callings, twice as Relief Society President. Theo cooked delicious meals and the family dinner hour was 6:00 p.m.---don't be late! She sewed beautiful clothing for herself and her three daughters as well as created artful needlework and crafts for her spotless home. For several years she enjoyed working as a school "lunch lady" at Meadow Moor Elementary school. For many years diabetes and arthritis presented challenges in her life, yet she continued to work hard and always whistled while she worked. Theo is preceded in death by her brothers, France and Hylan; sister, Joanne; and son-in-law, Scott, and is survived by her devoted husband; John, children; Linda Steiner (Nyle), Randy (DeAnn), Jodie Smart (Ron), and Tammy Morgan (Scott); also nine wonderful grandchildren; 15 delightful great-grandchildren; her brother, Carling Childs; and sister, Geneil Johnson. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, September 21, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. in the Holladay Tenth Ward Chapel, 4601 South 2565 East, Holladay. A viewing will be held on Sunday, September 20, 2009 at Holladay-Cottonwood Mortuary, 4670 South Highland Drive, from 6:30-8:00 p.m. Friends and family may also attend a viewing from 9:30-10:30 a.m. on Monday, September 21, 2009 at the Chapel prior to the services. Interment will follow in the Holladay Memorial Park, 4900 South Memory Lane (1990 East), Holladay. Published in the Deseret News from September 20 to September 21, 2009.
