Daughter of Alfred William Harper and Mary McClennen Hay Wife of John Holmes, married 13 June 1923 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah Sarah was the only child of Mary McClennen Hay and Alfred William Harper. She was born in Lindon, Utah, Utah, Oct 15, 1904. Her mother passed away three days after she was born. Her father lived until she was about two and one-half years old; so she doesn't remember either of them. Her mother was a second wife of her father's. He and his first wife, Mary Melissa Walker, had six daughters and three sons. Their second daughter, Annie and her husband Albert H. Wright, took her into their home and raised her as their own child. For this, she shall always be grateful. She was always treated with the greatest kindness. They gave her every opportunity they gave her their own children and shared their love with her. When Albert and Annie moved to Ogden in the winter of 1918 she stayed with her brother Perry and his wife, Emma, to finish the eighth grade of school, then came to Ogden to again live with them. She attended her elementary schooling in the Lindon School in Utah County, Utah, and her high school days were spent at Weber Normal College in Ogden, where she graduated in 1923. On June 13, 1923, she married John Holmes of Wilson, neighbors to us. We moved to a farm not far from Annie and Albert, where we have since resided. They have seven children: four girls and three sons. We have tried to encourage our children to get a good education. She has been very happy in her home life, although we have had some hardships to overcome. She feels they have been made stronger. During her life, she has held many church jobs. She taught Religion Class, the Seagull group in Primary for five years. She was a Sunday School teacher for a number of years. She taught Beehive girls for some time, was a counselor in the YWMIA, and also was President of that organization for two years. She served as Relief Society Magazine Representative for three years. She was on the Relief Society Stake Board. From April 1931 to June of 1939 she worked on the Primary Stake Board. She was teacher of the Family Relations Group in Sunday School and was acted as Ward Chorister and choir leader. With her church jobs and homework, she was kept busy and happy. She passed away on March 2, 1965, in Ogden, Weber, Utah, and was buried in Ogden City Cemetery.
