From Sargent Leader November 1958 Joe Helmkamp prominent businessman and civic leader here for nearly two decades, died last Thursday at his home from complications following a stroke suffered six months ago. Mr Helmkamp had operated the Service Garage here since 1940 and served as Sargent's mayor from 1950 to 1953. Last rites were held Monday afternoon at the Methodist Church with Rev. C. R. Fitz officiating. Bob Brown sang with Mrs Harold Pointer accompanist. Pallbearers were Clifford Stevens, Ed Brass, George Hale, Harvey Howard, Ernest Fees and Jack VanZandt. Spooner-Rhoad Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Taylor Cemetery - Sargent Leader. OBITUARY Joseph Jacob Helmkamp son of William G. and Marian Helmkamp, was born January 8, 1897 on the family farm 7 miles west of Taylor. He passed away at his home in Sargent on November 27, 1958 at the age of 61 years, 10 months and 19 days. He spent his early years in Loup County, and in 1917 was married to Miss Fannie Troxel. They made their home on a farm 5 miles north of Kent until following the death of Mrs Helmkamp in 1919. To this union one son, Chester, was born. After leaving the farm, he spent the remainder of his life managing garage businesses at Taylor and Sargent. In 1936 he and Miss Della Bowley were married at Taylor. Four years later they moved to Sargent, which has since been their home. One daughter, Linda, was born to the couple. He had been active in community affairs for several years having served Sargent as mayor, councilman, and member of the Chamber of Commerce and Lions Club. Surviving are his wife, Della; one son, Chester; of Rupert Idaho; and daughter, Linda at home; five grandchildren; two brothers, Bert and Howard, and sister, Marian Dunbar all of Taylor; also two nieces and two nephews.
