Chester Helmkamp the son of Joseph J and Fannie Helmkamp was born in Taylor Nebraska on May 3 1919. Tragically his mother passed away just 6 weeks later. Chet was then raised by his grandparents Bill and May Helmkamp and their daughter (Chester' aunt) Marian who was 9 at that time. Chet graduated from Taylor High School in 1938 and started working in his fathers service garage in Sargent Nebraska. Chet married Wilma Howard on May 24 1941 in Broken Bow Nebraska and they made their home in Sargent. Chet was drafted by the US Army in 1942 shortly after the birth of their first child. Chet was sent to England and assigned to the 231st Hospital Unit as an ambulance driver. He returned home in October 1945. In 1947 Chet and Wilma moved to her parents ranch in western Loup County Nebraska where the family grew to 5 (Bill, Beverly, Shirly, Richard and Bradley). In 1954 the ranch was sold so the family moved to a new 150 acre homestead near Rupert Idaho. The homestead was won in an Idaho land lottery drawing. They built a new home, cleared the brush from the land and started farming. Chet also worked as a carpenter when time permitted. In 1962 they sold the Idaho farm and moved to the Portland Oregon area due to Chet's health issues. Chet became a full time carpenter there until he retied in 1981. Following retirement Chet wanted to return to his Nebraska roots so they sold their Oregon home and moved back to Sargent Nebraska where they lived until he passed away in 1993.
