ZANE RAYMOND SMALTS Zane Raymond Smalts, the son of the late James Raymond and Nadine (Dougherty) Smalts was born March 17, 1944 at Guymon, Oklahoma. He entered into eternal rest on September 12, 2009, at his home in rural Cimarron County, Oklahoma, at the age of 65 years. Zane was raised on the farm, southeast of Keyes, Oklahoma. While growing up Zane and his family moved to Kenton, Oklahoma and also to Glenwood Springs, Colorado. The family always returned home to the family farm. Zane attended and graduated from the Keyes High School, in Keyes, Oklahoma. While in school, Zane enjoyed all sports, his favorite being track. After high school, Zane attended Panhandle A&M College in Goodwell, Oklahoma, where he participated in track. Zane met Carla Lynn Owens while in high school. They were united in marriage on December 24, 1964, at the Keyes Baptist Church in Keyes, Oklahoma, to this union three children were born; Randy, Travis and Janell. Zane enjoyed drag racing. He built many dragsters, in his younger years. He raced in the area, on and off the track. Many prized trophies were won with his dragsters. Zane was a true family man. He loved his family and enjoyed doing things with his family. The family went on many family vacations to Colorado, where they all took their motorcycles and rode the mountains. Zane and the family also attended and competed in many pitol shoots. Zane also won many trophies shooting his pistol, he especially liked silhouettes. Zane took his kids to many rodeos and he competed some in roping, but he really enjoyed watching his kids rodeo. Zane was always there for his family, they enjoyed spending time together. When he went to visit his family he would take a rope and practice roping the dummy with his kids and grandkids. Zane drove a school bus route for many years, for the Keyes School District. He enjoyed the kids on his route, and liked watching them grow up. Zane loved the farm, he liked to drive the tractor, which he did just this past Monday. He liked to work the soil, watch the crops grow and harvest the crops, he truly loved being a farmer and also enjoyed ranching and raising cattle. The family has lots of wonderful memories of their dad. Zane also liked watching the old western movies of John Wayne, Roy Rogers and Gene Autry, these were some of his favorites. Zane was a member of the Keyes Baptist Church, Keyes, Okalhoma. Zane met Aymee Hofferber on New Year's Eve, 2000. They enjoyed dancing, and Zane liked teaching Aymee about farming. In the later years, Zane attended the St. Johns Lutheran Church, in Hooker, Oklahoma. Zane was preceded in death by his wife Carla Lynn Smalts, on August 31, 1998. He is survived by his children; Randy Smalts and wife Sherilyn, of Dallas, Texas, Travis Smalts and wife Gina, of Forgan, Oklahoma and Janell Smalts, of Denver, Colorado; his two grandchildren, Kinsey and Bret Smalts, of Forgan, Oklahoma. Zane is also survived by a special friend, Aymee Hofferber, her children John Tarrant and wife Angela, of Pueblo, Colorado, Tim Hofferber and wife Melody, of Hooker, Oklahoma, Kristie Mills and husband Dale, formerly of Washington State, Lynn Bragg and husband Danny, of Wichita, Kansas, and Aymee's seven grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be Wednesday, September 16, 2009 at 2:00pm at the Keyes Baptist Church, Keyes, Oklahoma with Billy Rammage, Pastor Tom House and Mark Nickles, officiating. Interment will be in the Willowbar Cemetery. The family has suggested memorials to the Relay for Life, Amerian Cancer Society for Cimarron County, they may be left in care of the mortuary.
