Shirley, age 81, a lady of true dignity, began her eternal journey on Saturday. She was born the daughter of Harold & Gladys Florida. She graduated as valedictorian from Comstock High School and attended Hastings College in 1946. While at college, Shirley met her husband, Dick Uphoff, who also attended Hastings College. They married on June 3, 1948, in Sargent, NE, and settled in Geneva, NE, where they each started their first jobs as teachers. Shirley and Dick moved several times, living in Nebraska, California, Pennsylvania and Milwaukee, WI, before settling in Madison, WI, in 1957. Shirley's primary focus in life was raising her four children. She was involved in countless community efforts and had a passion for music and service to others. Shirley was an enthusiastic volunteer at Queen of Peace School and Edgewood High School while her children were growing up. She later became actively involved in Metropolitan Women's Club, St. Mary's Hospital Auxiliary Guild, Meriter Hospital Guild, League of Women's Voters, Attic Angels Association and Madison Literacy Council. Shirley had a beautiful voice and enjoyed performing on stage with the Madison Theatre Guild, the chorus for the Madison Opera and the Madison Civic Chorus. She sang in the choir at both St. Thomas Aquinas Church and Our Lady Queen of Peace Church. She was a featured soloist in the Hastings College Choir and at Christmas Eve services for many years. Shirley was a world traveler having visited four different continents - many in the last several years. She enjoyed going on safari in South Africa, touring through Europe and exploring the Amazon Rainforest in Brazil. She was her children's and grandchildren's number-one fan and loved to cheer on the kids at school activities and sporting events in Wisconsin, in Iowa and throughout the Midwest. Shirley was an accomplished golfer, successfully landing two hole-in-ones and participating in leagues while a member at Blackhawk Country Club. She was an avid Badger football and basketball fan. Shirley is survived by her husband, Dick; and her four grateful, loving children and their families, Rod Uphoff and wife, Marsha of Columbia, MO, and son, Ryan; Cheryl Hoff and husband, Steve of Middleton, WI, and children, Casey, Colin and Chelsea; Nancy Craig and husband, Paul of Cedar Rapids, IA, and children, Matthew, Alex and Adam; and Jim Uphoff and partner, Alex Brayboy of San Francisco, CA. Shirley is also survived by her sister, Velma Chalupsky of Edna, TX; and many special nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. All family members recognize how blessed they were to have Shirley in their lives. She was a role model to all and lovingly appreciated each family member. She enjoyed a special relationship with each of her grandchildren. Shirley will be sorely missed, but all will cherish many special memories. Shirley was appreciative of the love and support of her many friends and grateful for the care provided by Dr. Julie Chang and her nurse, Sarah, countless other doctors and nurses at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics and staff of Hospice Care. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church with Msgr. Douglas Dushack officiating. Private family burial.
