Son of Malcolm Wilson and Mary Nellie Winchester Dykes Husband of Dollie Jeanette Banks Dykes, Glen Curtis Chapel services for Glen Curtis Dykes, 92, of Tyler, are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 24, 2009, at Tyler Memorial Funeral chapel with the Rev. Sherman Mayfield and Don Reel officiating. Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Smyrna Cemetery near Winnsboro under the direction of Tyler Memorial Funeral Home. Mr. Dykes was born June 8, 1917, in Winnsboro to the late Malcolm Wilson and Mary Nellie Winchester Dykes, and passed away Dec. 21, 2009, in Tyler. He was the fifth of nine children. He moved to Tyler in 1956, and served in the Navy during World War II. In his early life he was a farmer, potter, an oilfield worker, a longtime employee of Western Foundry and retired as a security guard from Emerald Bay. He was also an ordained Baptist minister. He served as pastor of numerous churches in Wood County and stood strong in his faith and love of his Lord. He was a member of Lake Tyler Baptist Church. Mr. Dykes loved his family and entertained his grandchildren with stories of his childhood memories. Mr. Dykes was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Dolly "Duggan" Banks Dykes; brother, Weldon Dykes; and sisters, Lula Albright, Lorena Green, Lillie Bell McMullen and Carrie King. He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Frances Dykes of Tyler; sons, Gene Dykes of Center, Joe Dykes and wife LaNell of Center; daughters, Mary Alice and husband Joe Taylor of Overton, and Karen Campbell of Zavalla; brothers, Olan Dykes and wife Juanita, and Jerry Dykes of Winnsboro; sister Mable Lois Mayo of Winnsboro; two granddaughters; six grandsons; seven great-grandchildren; stepdaughters, Sheila and husband Dickie Grooms of Tyler, Sharon and Steve Walker of Channelview, and Theresa and Chris Albritton of Abilene; six stepgrandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Special thanks to the staff and caretakers of Clairmont Nursing Home and Legacy Hospice.
