Bio

Mrs. Washburn Services Held on Wednesday Early Settler in Vermillion Dies as Result of Long Siege of Illness Final rites were held at 2:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon in the Elmore funeral parlors for Mrs. Mary Washburn, 81 years old, an early settler here, who died Monday in the home of her son, Elmer Washburn. Rev. W. C. Deer, pastor of the First Baptist church, officiated and burial was in Bluff View cemetery beside the graves of her husband, W. H. H. Washburn, and four of the six deceased children. Mrs. Washburn had been in ill health for the past two years and her death was attributed to a complication of maladies. She was bedridden much of the time during her illness. Mrs. Washburn, nee Mary Jane Cook, was born January 26, 1850 in Rockford, Ill., and was married here in 1873 to Mr. Washburn. He died 25 years ago. In 1910 she moved to Yankton and in 1918 to Bellingham, Wash. where she remained until she returned here last September. She attended the Baptist church. Surviving are four children, William Washburn of Hopper, Minn., Elmer of Vermillion, and Harrison Washburn and Mrs. Lula Banister of Bellingham. The community expresses deep regret in the death of Mrs. Washburn, who was known and admired by many. Vermillion Plain Talk, Vermillion, South Dakota, February 12, 1931
