Mary Cook [Mother of Elizabeth Cook who married Henry Clay Washburn] Born between 1809–1815 - May 19, 1890 Died: In this city (Vermillion SD), Monday, May 19, 1890, Mrs. Mary Cook, aged 76 years. A native of Penn., she and her husband were among the early settlers in the Fox River Valley, Ill. Becoming a widow in 1859, ten years later she became a resident of Clay County, having made her home with her son-in-law, H.C. Washburn. For five years past she has been afflicted with almost total blindness. She was a firm believer in the M.E. faith, and requested previous to her death that the old hymn "Nearer My God to Thee," should be sung at her funeral. In the early history of this county she was ever ready to attend the calls of sickness and need, and her ministrations are gratefully remembered by scores of people. Dakota Republican, Vermillion, South Dakota, May 22, 1890
