Charles Oglesby was the Sheriff for Pulaski County, in Indiana. He died in the line of duty at age 41. Sheriff Oglesby was requested by a Train Engineer on a Pennsylvania Railroad Freight Train, to assist removing three hobo's from his train. The Engineer found them on a stop in Star City, Indiana, and ordered them off, but they refused to leave. Unknown to the Sheriff at the time the three men were not hobo's, they were a gang of safe-crackers who had recently burglarized the Marsh Store in Burnettsville, Indiana. As Sheriff Oglesby approached the men, one of the suspects ran from the train, up the railroad tracks, heading north. The other two suspects held their ground. Both men pulled weapons, firing shots at Sheriff Oglesby, Sheriff Oglesby returned gunfire. The second suspect attempted to run from the scene, as a bullet hits below his left shoulder by Sheriff Oglesby, as he tries climbing a fence to escape. The third suspect then managed to shoot Sheriff Oglesby in the chest, but before he could escape, Sheriff shot him in the stomach. Sheriff Oglesby was taken to his home, where he died several hours later from his wounds, surrounded by family and friends. A posse was quickly organized, to seek out the three suspects. Two suspects were found hiding in a nearby cornfield. Both were tired and wounded. They surrendered without incident. The third suspect was captured wandering aimlessly among the railroad tracks, north of Winamac. The suspect wounded by Sheriff Oglesby later died of his wounds. The other two were sentenced to Prison. Sheriff Oglesby had been with the Pulaski County Sheriffs Department for just 10 months. He was survived by his wife and three children. His wife, Mary J. Oglesby, born May of 1876, was 31 at the time. And his 3 daughters, Emma M. Oglesby, born in November of 1895, she was 11 at the time, and Lessie L. Oglesby, born in February of 1898, she was 9 at the time, and a third one born after the 1900 Census.
