Bio

The following is taken from "Family Land Heritage" Registry Volume 2, 1975, published by Texas Department of Agriculture, John C. White, Commissioner, page 67, Henderson County: Gauntt Farm - 1861 - Four miles northeast of LaRue on Fincastle Road Founder: Luke Gauntt of South Carolina 1875 Owners: Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth W. Gauntt, LaRue Otto Courtney Gauntt, Eustace Mr. and Mrs. Billy W. Holder, LaRue Luke Gauntt left the Newberry District of South Carolina in 1850 looking for land on which to start a new homestead. He finally settled on 320 acres in 1861 and raised cattle, cotton, corn and grains. Gauntt's oldest son, John Washington Gauntt began farming in 1879, adding 50 acres to Increase production of the same crops his father had raised. He also bought some land in Athens and helped establish a tradition of Gauntt merchants that has lasted for four generations. John's son Dewitt bought some of the family land in 1896 and began producing cattle, corn and cotton. He later purchased the remainder of the family tract in 1929. Dewitt's son, Otto, one of five current owners, bought his land beginning in 1934 and concluding in 1955. Cattle and hay are the principal products produced by the current owners on the 190 acres remaining from the original 320. Today's production is managed by Otto Gauntt's two children, Kenneth Gauntt and Wanda Gauntt Holder, and their families.
