Funeral services for Henry P. Mertens were held Thursday morning March 18 at nine o'clock at Sacred Heart church, Lawrence Nebraska. The Rev. N. Nowicki offered the Requiem High Mass. Henry P. Mertens, son of Henry and Anna Mertens, was born in St. Louis, Mo. on June 28, 1892 and passed away at his home in Lawrence, Nebraska on March 14, 1953 at the age of 60 years, 8 months, and 14 days. He was united in marriage to Lena Kimminau on Sept. 29, 1925 at St. Stephens church, Lawrence, Nebraska with the Rev. A. Hahn officiating. Shortly after the wedding, Mr. Mertens located in Lawrence where he and his brother Chris Mertens started the Mertens Bros Meat Market with which he was associated at the time of his death. During his 27 years of residence in the Lawrence community, his honesty, fortitude and industry merited the admiration of all who were privileged to know him well. He was a devote member of Sacred Heart parish and belonged to St. Stephens Council of the Knight's of Columbus. The deceased is survived by his wife Lena; one daughter, Mrs. Bob Schuster of Dyersville, Iowa; three sons; James of Lincoln; Edwin of the U.S. Navy and Arnold at home, two grandchildren Rickey and Peggy Mertens of Lincoln; One sister, Mrs. Anna Kathman of Nashville, Kansas; four brothers, Chris Mertens of Lawrence; Ted Mertens of Meadedale, Kansas; and John Mertens of Wichita, Kansas, all of whom were present at the funeral. The deceased was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mrs. Anton Henning. Burial was made in Sacred Heart Cemetery at 3:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon with the Rev. S. J. Wagner officiating at the graveside services. Burial was delayed to await the arrival of a son Edwin who was in Japan at the time of his fathers death. Pallbearers were six nephews, Eugene Mertens, Edwin Mertens, Jerome Eohre, Thomas Kimminau, Robert Wermeskerch, and Arthur Kimminau. Mertens, 60, a resident of the Lawrence community for 30 years, are being held this (Thursday) morning at the Sacred Heart Church there. He died at his home following a heart attack. Born in St. Louis, Mo., he had operated a grocery store in Lawrence with his brother Chris. Surviving are his wife, Lena; three sons, Arnold at home, Edwin, in military service, and James of Lincoln; a daughter, Mrs. Robert Schuster of Dyersville, Ia.; two grandchildren, four brothers and a sister.
